Concurrence

Concurrence is an ongoing series of portraits of the people around me. I decided to photograph my friends and family as a way of capturing them at that moment in our lives, offering a view of each person and their circumstances. Living in London, I have always found the city’s multiculturalism reflected in my many connections with people from not only different countries but also varied economic backgrounds. The project was originally prompted by the UK’s controversial decision to leave the European Union, and I have sensed, in many of those I photographed, a deep disappointment with the country they had chosen to call home—some even felt compelled to leave.

Each image is the outcome of a private interview or conversation between the sitter and me. The series is a personal reflection on the coincidental nature of friendships, and an acknowledgment that the circumstances binding people together are in a constant state of flux.

When photographing the portraits, I have endeavored to minimize the presence of the camera as much as possible. I achieved this by composing and focusing the shot in advance, using a cable release, and only occasionally checking the camera. This allowed me to engage my sitters in real conversation, pressing the shutter instinctively when the moment felt right.

I chose to photograph each sitter in their bedroom, as it enhances the visual narrative by providing context to their circumstances and offering the audience a deeper understanding of the subject. The bedroom also serves as a space for me to conduct the interviews—a safe, intimate environment where the subjects feel comfortable. The interviews are not structured in a conventional sense; they unfold naturally, following the direction the sitter chooses. Topics have ranged from childhood, relationships, hopes, fears, aspirations, and regrets.
